We have completed our review of the six chapters of The Mother by Sri Aurobindo. This compact book has a tremendous power of transformative energy. While The Life Divine delves into issues in an expansive and comprehensive way, this book has concentrated on the essentials of how the seeker can align himself with the evolutionary change that is taking place.
Whether a seeker is following the path of knowledge, love and devotion, or works primarily, this text provides the understanding and psychological standpoint needed to achieve the desired result.
We are planning to take up the text Rebirth and Karma next–an interesting and controversial subject that nonetheless has profound interest for many people.

People are occupied with outward things. That means that the consciousness is turned towards external things – that is, all the things of life which one sees, knows, does – instead of being turned inwards in order to find the deeper truth, the divine Presence. This is the first movement. You are busy with all that you do, with the people around you, the things you use; and then with life: sleeping, eating, talking, working a little, having a little fun also; and then beginning over again: sleeping, eating, etc., etc., and then it begins again. And then what this one has said, what that one has done, what one ought to do, the lesson one ought to learn, the exercise one ought to prepare; and then again whether one is keeping well, whether one is feeling fit, etc. This is what one usually thinks about.

Sri Aurobinod’s epic Savitri running into about twenty-four thousand lines is not only a literary masterpiece; it is the supreme revelation of his vision, and a record of his yogic and spiritual attainments. It proclaims the future of man and prepares the necessary ground for the powers of the spirit to enter into his life. As an example, it speaks of the essential sound becoming the material sound, and it is that which can give rise to new expression. These are the possibilities, and these have been most forcefully and luminously brought out by the Mother. It is that gift of hers which we value most.

In Henri Cartier-Bresson’s life that remained eventful till the end, one chapter belonged to the photographer’s visit to Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry in the ’50s. The father of modern photojournalism had of course been to India earlier, met Mahatma Gandhi and even covered his funeral. All of that remains well-known but his work on the Ashram remains comparatively less talked about. Bresson, it is said, had a knack for bearing witness to historic moments. So this time too, he was there shooting Sri Aurobindo, the revered yogi-philosopher-guru-poet, just a few months before his death.

While there are many forms and aspects of the Divine Shakti manifesting in the universe, Sri Aurobindo identifies four of them as primary. These four represent signal powers and capacities needed to bring about the completeness of the earthly evolution. Sri Aurobindo describes them in brief:
“One is her personality of calm wideness and comprehending wisdom and tranquil benignity and inexhaustible compassion and sovereign and surpassing majesty and all-ruling greatness.” This one is called Maheshwari.
“Another embodies her power of splendid strength and irresistible passion, her warrior mood, her overwhelming will, her impetuous swiftness and world-shaking force.” This one is called Mahakali.
“A third is vivid and sweet and wonderful with her deep secret of beauty and harmony and fine rhythm, her intricate and subtle opulence, her compelling attraction and captivating grace.” This one is Mahalakshmi.

Mother, suffering comes from ignorance and pain, but what is the nature of the suffering and pain the Divine Mother feels for her children—the Divine Mother in Savitri?
It is because she participates in their nature. She has descended upon earth to participate in their nature. Because if she did not participate in their nature, she could not lead them farther. If she remained in her supreme consciousness where there is no suffering, in her supreme knowledge and consciousness, she could not have any contact with human beings. And it is for this that she is obliged to take on the human consciousness and form, it is to be able to enter into contact with them.
